I Have a 2 year old ZZ 502 502.It has developed what apears to be a head gasket leak at the very back of the passenger side cylinder head .The leak has been there for a little over a year, but was hard to trace down till now.Is this common for the 502? Its small amounts of oil that seeps out beteen the block and head , can this be retourqed and fixed. Also is there any reputable mechanics in the Portland erea that knows about 502 aluminum heads and motors i can be steared to who can do me justice on this head gasket issue??THX |

heckler, Yes and sorry. Scott and I both saw your original post and some how, even though not intended, we forgot to post a response to it. Your hello message just made us wake up and realize this. Now, to everyone else, don't go posting hellos all over the board. Sometimes we just don't have an answer and instead of repeatedly posting "I don't know." for a response to them, we leave it for someone else to that might have the answer. So usually “no response” from us does not mean we just forgot like in this case. If a person really needs a response like yesterday, just call and talk to one of our counter sales people using our toll free 1-800-545-0048 phone number. Now that all that is out of the way with, back to your original question. The odds of the leak coming from the head are very slim to none. The oil pressure in a head is low. Oil just shoots out the rods and drains back into the block through the drain holes. If there is oil showing up in this area it is more likely coming from the distributor gasket or the intake manifold leaking. This is not a common problem, but can happen. Scott says that Napa sells a dye kit for oil that uses a black light to pinpoint the exact point of the leak that you might look into as a tool to prove where the leak is really coming from. If the leak is from either the intake manifold or the distributor, the oil will run down the seam between the head and the block making it appear to be coming from there when it isn't. Fixing an oil leak isn’t any big deal so any mechanic that has worked on a 502 would be plenty qualified for this operation. If you need to know what to use for gaskets or sealers, just give us a call. Look to the intake and distributor as the source first before worrying about the head though, if nothing else. |

Thx!I did the dye thing and it apears to be in the back head seam all the way down,I cant see any thing at the dist.or intake gasket any where.but i assume it can be squessing out at the corner and then leaking down from there. What i found with the dye is that its much easier to see it when its pooled up or thick, makeing it hard to pin point a higher up location if thats where its comeing from.Part of my problem my be that im useing an incandesant light rather than a florecent Light.I put plenty of dye in and turned the light way down.I'll find a Mech around here who knows 502z and have him hit it with florecent and see if that dos'nt clear things up a bit.At the very least i think i'll have him do the intake as it will be the cheapest bet at this point!Dave,,54 tilt 502 gasser,,50 cad 6237DX,,54 210 low@slow,,62 ferrari 250 GTO<240z>,,"Southern Cal" Aped Harley,,And my redheaded step child, 60 ford F100.. |

heckler, You do need to use a black light with the dye to get it to show up well. That is, if what you are using isn't different and it says otherwise. In that case you have to follow the directions that came with what you are using. This shouldn't be too hard for a mechanic to pin down and fix from this point on. Let us know the results.
