Your combination must be thought over carefully. With the lightweight of the vehicle combined with fairly low overall gearing, you can "get away" with higher compression than "normal", but all the factors must be considered. You indicate 400/700 trans, the overdrive of the 700R4 dictates lower compression than the straight TH400, also the cylinder head selection (oval - rect, and as Tom mentioned aluminum or iron)has a great influence on cylinder pressure. I might mention that you could choose a more modern camshaft profile to your advantage (another BIG factor in the equation). Torque converter selection depends on which trans, and the finial combo!
