The "rooster comb" cast in the exhaust port floor was the result of dry airflow tests done in the early 70's, it was supposed to reduce turbulance and reversion problems. I've worked with this head and the 862 Bow Tie with a similar device and found in actual engine operation that they perform better with most of the hump removed. I do leave some material towards the seat to help form a larger short side radius on the 862 head. Hope this helps - DRHP
