Steve, the 502 in stock form operates just fine! But if you want even more power, the basic hot rod techniques still apply. Increased airflow is the goal, ported heads, proper camshaft profile, etc. The marine customer normaly desires more top speed, with cruising at 2800 to 3400 RPM secondary. The idea is to develop more TORQUE higher up in the RPM range than a automotive application, this means single plane intake, a Holley 1050 CFM carb, fairly large cam (in regards to low compression - 9.4:1), GOOD exhaust manifolds and system, and mechancial strength items like Inconel exhaust valves, stainless roller rockers, main studs, etc. are required also. So you can see that marine 502 hop-up can be as extensive as your pocketbook will allow! Hope this helps -DRHP
