I have been researching this as well. The 4L60 that GM has, part # 8686960, with the optional tailshaft, part #8673906, will bolt right in. If you do need to shorten the drive shaft it is cheap, about 40-60 bucks. That usally includes balancing. Not a bad idea.
Also, Shiftworks, www.shiftworks.com, has a kit that makes the original shifter work and cables to. It even has a shift indicator for the console has the overdrive "D" in it. It is really cool!!
