Pre-1986 cankshaft and 1986 to present time crankshaft.
GM 1986 Crankshaft Change
In 1986 GM changed their cranshaft design from a two-piece seal type to a one-piece seal type. This page is to help explain that change.
The crankshaft shown on the left is the 1986 and later one-piece seal type. The crankshaft shown on the right is the pre-1986 two-piece seal type. The one-piece seal type will appear flat against the back of the engine where the flange will be visible sticking out past the engine with the two-piece seal type. In the picture above the flange on the two-piece seal crank is pointed out. On both small blocks and big blocks the front seal was not changed. One-piece rear main seal crankshaft required a counter weighted flywheel to take the place of the flange weight.
Adapters for one-piece seal to two-piece seal types are available to make use of the wider selection of two-piece seal cranks available.
