This page shows the difference between self-aligning and standard rocker arms that use guide plates. Never mix self-aligning rocker arms with guide plates. Standard rocker arms must use guide plates. Self-aligning rocker arms do not need the guide plates, but if you use guide plates with self-aligning rocker arms, there is a high risk of this causing damage to the valve train and pushrods. Never use standard rocker arms without guide plates or you will damage your engine.

Self-aligning stamped steel rocker arm use stamped dimple impressions to hole the rocker tip on the end of the valve stem. Self-aligning roller tip rocker arms usually use two washers on both sides of the roller to hold the tip on the end of the valve stem. In some other cases, self-aligning roller tip roller rockers will have the body of the rocker molded so that the body of the rocker itself is protruding down on both sides of the roller and is used to hold the tip of the rocker on the end of the valve stem.
