LS1 Street Rod Engine Kit, P/N 25534322, FAQ supplied by GM for Chevrolet
The LS1 Street Rod Engine kit is designed to facilitate installation of the LS1 engine in past model vehicles. The kit includes a LS1 engine assembly, engine computer wiring harness, and engine computer calibrated for use with a 4L60E automatic transmission. The LS1 engines included in the kit may vary in content and configuration. Please review the configuration of your engine before procuring additional parts. This sheet will help answer some of the frequently asked questions when using the LS1 kit.
What Accessory drive parts should I use?
The kit was developed around using 1998-2001 F-car (Camaro/Firebird) accessory drive components. Custom air conditioning and power steering hoses will need to be fabricated. The A/C compressor is designed for use with R-134a refrigerant.
What is the hole for on the inlet manifold, directly behind the throttle body?
Some inlet manifolds may have a hole directly behind the throttle body for the EGR feed pipe. The EGR system is not used in this application and the hole will need to be plugged to prevent a vacuum leak.
Where do I attach the throttle cable bracket, my inlet manifold is missing the thread inserts?
Some of the inlet manifolds may not contain the thread inserts in the inlet manifold, select the proper size Nut-set® thread insert and install in the inlet manifold bosses.
The fuel rail only has one connection, where do I attach the return fuel line?
The LS1 fuel rail is a return-less design and requires a regulated fuel supply at a pressure of 58 psi. The fuel rail is configured for a quick connection fitting. Revision of the rail connection may be required for different style connections. The 1997 Corvette fuel rail incorporates a pressure regulator and can be substituted when using a fuel system with return line.
What starter do I use?
Use starter part number 10465385 and bolts 12561848 and 12561387.
What version of the 4L60E should I use?
The 1998, 1999, and 2000 LS1 F-car transmissions (P/N’s 24210673, 24212631, and 24216077) are designed to be used with the calibration in the engine computer. Bolt the transmission to the engine using 11515767 bellhousing bolts and 1261968 torque converter bolts.
I want to use a 1998-2000 T56 six-speed manual transmission instead, will the computer still work?
Yes, the computer will still work. However, the computer will set numerous transmission trouble codes that will turn on the check engine light. The vehicle speed output from the engine will also be incorrect, since the 4L60E has a 40 tooth wheel on the output shaft compared to the 17 tooth wheel on the T56.
There is no provision on the late model 4L60E transmission for a mechanical drive speedometer cable. What do I do?
Many aftermarket gauge manufactures offer an electronic speedometer to replace the cable driven design. Feed the signal from the computer into the electronic speedometer and follow the manufacture’s instructions on calibration.
The other alternative is to install an adapter box that converts the electrical signal back to mechanical one. TCI and other aftermarket manufactures offer these boxes.
Where do I find torque specifications for the engine?
Torque specifications can be found in the 1998 through 2000 Camaro/Firebird shop manuals in the Engine section.
How many oxygen sensors are used?
Two oxygen sensors are used, one for each bank, located between the exhaust manifold and catalytic converters (optional).
What vehicle do I tell the Tech2 I have if I want to investigate engine operation?
Select the 1998 model year, passenger car, LS1 V8, and automatic transmission.
I’m not sure of where all the wires go on the engine wiring harness, what can I reference to understand where the various components are on the engine?
The wiring harness and related components are covered in the 1998 Camaro/Firebird shop manual. The wiring harness has some components referenced that are not used in the street rod application.
What air meter and IAT (Inlet Air Temperature) sensor should I use?
The computer is designed to use P/N 25179711 air meter and P/N 12160244 IAT sensor.
The RH side of the engine oil pan has a low level oil sensor. I can’t find the connector for it on the wiring harness, where is it?
The low oil sensor is not used in this application.
What fuel pump is recommended?
When using an in-tank fuel pump, use fuel pump P/N 25163473. Frame-mounted external fuel pumps need to supply 200 pounds per hour of fuel at 58 psi.
What temperature does the computer turn on the cooling fan?
The engine computer will turn on the fan if it determines that the air conditioning clutch is engaged or the coolant temperature is above 212 degrees F.
How do I connect the engine to the radiator?
The hose fitting on the water pump that contains the thermostat housing goes to the lower radiator fitting and the other fitting goes to the upper radiator hose connection. Don’t forget to route the cylinder head vent pipe through the throttle body fitting. From the throttle body, route a hose to the upper radiator hose or tank.
Note: Failure to return the cylinder head vent line water to the upper tank of the radiator will result in an overheating condition caused by pockets of air trapped in the cylinder head cooling passages.
Where is the rev-limiter set at in the computer?
The computer will shut off fuel to the injectors at an engine speed above 6,200 rpm.
Do I need a special tachometer to work with the engine computer?
No, most after-market and production tachometers set in the 8-cylinder position work fine.
LS1 Web Page Questions Supplied By Chevrolet
The crate engine specs show that this comes with a 14” flexplate, why do your pictures show a manual flywheel and clutch plate?
A 14” flexplate is what GMPP says is suppose to come on this crate engine kit. What actually comes in the crate is what we have taken pictures of and posted on the web site. GMPP may correct this some time in the future, but in the meantime we are taking the flywheel and clutch plate off and putting the flexplate on at no charge for those that need it that way. We carry both of these in stock, so their is not going to be much of a problem with getting this crate engine with either the flexplate or flywheel.
I’ve heard that the HP and Torque ratings specified are for “at the rear wheels”, is this true?
Yes it is, but only for Camaros and Firebirds that these engines came in from the factory.
I’ve seen pictures of this crate engine on other sites and yours that show pictures with beauty covers and accessories, does it come with these?
No! There are some people, like us, that will take pictures that show it with other things on it, just so you can see what it would look like that way or in a car so that you can see what it would look like in a car. If you see a picture of one in a car, it does not indicate that you get a car with it. Neither does it mean, that if you see one with beauty covers on it, that it comes with them on it.
