Chevrolet and GM Performance Parts - Chevrolet “Gen 3 And Gen 4 Design” LS1 - LS2 - LS6 - LQ4 Engine Parts
This page is dedicated to the “Gen 3” engine design which is not compatible with traditional GM engines. All of the GMPP “Gen 3” parts listed in the 2003 GM Performance Parts catalog are listed on this page and we will continue to add more parts as GM adds them to their catalog. GMPP shows the LS1 (LS-1) crate engine and some of the LS6 (LS-6) parts in their catalog. Nothing on the LQ4 of note yet. The LS2 crate engine is now available but not in their 2004 catalog. The LS2 engine is replacing the LS6 factory production engine so the factory production LS6 engine will not be available any longer after the end of November 2004 from what GM says. All the other LS6 crate engines and parts will still be available though.

The Gen 3 engine design is not compatible with traditional GM engines. Only parts designed for the Gen 3 engines will work on any of the Gen 3 engines. Gen 3 heads for the LS1 or any other Gen 3 engine parts will work on any Gen 3 block including the Big-Block Gen 3 block. For this reason, we at Chevrolet and GM Performance Parts have made this separate section on our web site dedicated to only the Gen 3 engine design.

12480005 Aluminum Cylinder Head, “Gen 3” V8 LS1 (Discontinued) --
The “Gen 3” V8 (RPO-LS1) engine is used in all 1997 and later Corvettes, and 1998 and later Camaros. A special manifold must be fabricated to use this head. Use with special cylinder block P/N 12480030. These discontinued cylinder heads are the same as P/N 12480090 except for the following:
• The chamber volume for the discontinued P/N 12480005 head is 38cc with flat faced valves of .75mm inlet and 1.5mm exhaust margins. P/N 12480090 provides additional material over discontinued P/N 12480005 for CNC porting and chamber shaping and starts at a volume of less than 30cc’s.
Technical Note: Replaced by P/N 12480090 cylinder head.
12480090 Aluminum Cylinder Head, “Gen 3” V8 LS1 (Pic)
The “Gen 3” V8 (RPO-LS1) engine is used in all 1997 and later Corvettes, and 1998 and later Camaros. A special manifold must be fabricated to use this head. Use with special cylinder block P/N 12480030. To compete successfully in GT-2 racing an aftermarket parts development started with the intent of providing the new GM powertrain LS1 engine a higher performance platform. The first component designed was the cylinder head with an intent to provide a part that was similar to the LS1 in appearance for sanctioning body approval. The cylinder heads include the following features:
• The basic height, width and attachment faces are in stock location to dowel and deck position.
• All dimensions and fasteners are metric.
• The basic valve angle was revised from 15 to 11 degrees to produce a smaller chamber.
• The valve angle also provides more space for aftermarket rocker arms. Jesel valve train systems has provided the current race pieces. The production individual pedestals are cast into a continuous feature tieing all the bosses together.
• The rocker cover hold down bosses are incorporated into the rocker arm plateau for the 4-bolt center hold down type cover (1999 model year).
• The inlet port roof and floor is raised and the attachment pattern is designed for a Kinsler fuel injection manifold.
• Inlet port is 57.15 x 36.58mm / 55.957mm dia. precision finished.
• The cylinder head is machined for larger diameter springs (41.5mm or 1.63” dia. machined pocket).
• The exhaust flange is identical with the production part. The exhaust port is stock size.
• The head is machined for a 12.712 / 12.688mm dia. valve guide bore.
• Rocker cover oil rail seal is a reverse tapered groove for a 3.2mm dia. (.125”) free length “O” Ring.
88958622 Head, Gen 3 Aluminum Racing (Pic)

This head is characterized by a “D” shaped exhaust opening at the exhaust flange. [Old P/N 12560808]

12480030 Block, Gen 3 Aluminum Siamesed Bore Racing Block (Page)
This is the same block that was used in the LeMans 24 hour endurance racing C5R Corvettes, and is intended for maximum effort competition engines. This block has the same production external dimensions and bosses, but the primary difference between this block and the Gen 3 production blocks is a siamesed water jacket, which allows engine builders to build engines with larger bore sizes. The delivered, pre hone, bore size is 4.117”, and the maximum finished bore size recommended with this block is 4.160”. Cylinder deck height is 9.240”. This block uses a dry, pressed-in liner similar to other GM racing aluminum small blocks. Steel billet bearing caps are fitted to the block. This block features wet sump style oiling and is made from high strength A356 aluminum that utilizes a modified T7 heat treat. Production Gen 3 style cylinder heads may be used on this block; however, for maximum performance, P/N 12480090 Gen 3 racing cylinder heads should be used.
