“GEN 3” LS1 BARE BLOCK DESCRIPTION | ![]() |
“Gen 3” LS1 Bare Block
P/N 12480030The “Gen 3” V8 (RPO-LS1) engine is used in all 1997 and later Corvettes, and 1998 and later Camaros. Use with special cylinder head P/N 12480005. To compete successfully in GT-2 racing and aftermarket parts development started with the intent of providing the new GM powertrain LS1 engine a higher performance platform. One of the first components designed was the cylinder and case with an intent to provide a part that was similar to the LS1 in appearance for sanctioning body approval. This is the same block that was used in the LeMans 24 hour endurance racing C5R Corvettes, and is intended for maximum effort competition engines. This block has the same production external dimensions and bosses, but the primary difference between this block and the Gen 3 production blocks is a siamesed water jacket, which allows engine builders to build engines with larger bore sizes. The delivered, pre hone, bore size is 4.117”, and the maximum finished bore size recommended with this block is 4.160”. Cylinder deck height is 9.240”. This block uses a dry, pressed-in liner similar to other GM racing aluminum small blocks. Steel billet bearing caps are fitted to the block. This block features wet sump style oiling and is made from high strength A356 aluminum that utilizes a modified T7 heat treat. Production Gen 3 style cylinder heads may be used on this block; however, for maximum performance, P/N 12480090 Gen 3 racing cylinder heads should be used. Note: In the above description, it refers to both the 12480005 and the 12480090 cylinder heads. 12480005 has been discontinued and completely replaced by 12480090. |
