America’s favorite big-block crate engine is now available fully assembled. All the same great parts used in the ZZ502 kit engines, but fully assembled for easier installation in your hot rod.
The Base Engine is a fully assembled long block with valve covers and valve train. The Base Engine includes a fully assembled short block with 2.25” intake aluminum heads, valvetrain, aluminum valve covers, torsional damper and 14” automatic transmission flexplate.
The king of all big block crate engines is the ZZ502/502, with torque and horsepower that will have you grinning and streetable manners that have your competition wondering what hit them. The ZZ502/502 represents our latest and best efforts to develop awe inspiring big block power in a dependable, durable and drivable big block crate engine.
With it’s big valve aluminum heads, roller camshaft and complete dyno tuned induction and ignition system, this is as close as you can come to a custom built 502 at crate engine prices.
The ZZ502/502 makes extensive use of aluminum to keep weight down. This king of the crate engines is full of heavy duty parts, to ensure that it will be making awesome power for a long time. With it’s forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods with 7/16” bolts, forged steel crankshaft, four bolt main block, stainless steel valves, 6 quart oil pan, and windage tray, the ZZ502/502 seems more like a custom race engine than a crate engine. With a 5800 RPM redline it might just feel more like a custom race engine than a crate engine too.
For anyone looking for more power - GM Performance Parts has designed the hot rodder’s ultimate dream engine. Everything you need to beef up your 1967 or older passenger car or any year off highway vehicles is included in this 502ci/502hp engine. This engine produces a staggering 502 hp with 567 lb ft of torque with a modest 9.6:1 compression ratio. This engine also features an all new oval port aluminum cylinder head design with 2.25” intake and 1.88” exhaust valves and 11/32” valve stems.
Notes:
• GMPP crate engines are not intended for marine use. There is no warranty on this engine if used for marine applications. If you want a marine engine with a warranty, we suggest you buy a marine engine from a GM marine engine dealer.
• GMPP crate engines come with a twelve month, 12,000 mile warranty. See the Information section of the Chevrolet Web site to obtain a copy of this warranty.
• GMPP engines are brand new and do not contain any used or remanufactured parts except some crate engines may come with a remanufactured starter.
• This engine is intended to be used in 1976 and older pre-emissions street vehicles. Applications for this engine are for street use, the weekend street/strip drag racer, the weekend street/road road racer or any strictly off road only application where the use of this engine in that application would be emissions legal. Check with your local authorities for the emissions laws and standards in your area to see if this engine will be usable in your application. It is illegal for dealers to knowingly sell parts to people that will aid those people in breaking emissions laws.
• GMPP engines are not intended for nitrous, alcohol, supercharger, or strictly racing applications and require some prep work prior to use in these applications. Failure to properly prep an engine for these applications may and can result in engine damage. Altering these engines can also result in the GMPP warranty being violated. Check with your GMPP dealer to make sure that any alterations you plan will not violate the GMPP warranty prior to making these alterations.

Ignition Timing: Intital timing of 8° BTDC @ 800 RPM, 36° total timing at 3000 RPM with vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged. This setting will produce 36° of total advance at wide open throttle (WOT). Inital timing isn't that important. The total timing is what is important which is the inital timing plus the distributor’s mechanical (centrifugal) timing and this should all in by 3,000 RPM.
Technical Notes:
• This is the assembled P/N 12371204 long-block kit, it is not a complete engine.
• The 502ci engine assembly includes a 14” diameter automatic transmission flexplate with dual bolt patterns (P/N 10185034). For manual transmission applications, a 14” diameter flywheel drilled for an 11” clutch is available as P/N 14096987. Due to differences in crankshaft counterweights, this flywheel should be used only with the forged steel crankshafts installed in 454 HO and 502 HO engine assemblies.
• Distributor (P/N 93440886 or 88961867) or melonized distributor gear (P/N 10456413) must be used on all crate engines with steel camshafts.
• The ZZ502/502 engine assembly includes a six quart oil pan. When installing a Gen 5 or Gen 6 big-block in most Chevelles, Camaros, or similar chassis, the pan and oil pump must be modified to clear the front crossmember or use the 4 quart oil pan kit P/N 12495360.
• The ZZ502/502 requires an electric fuel pump because the 502 Gen 6 block does not have a fuel pump boss.
• The clutch linkage boss is cast into the block but it must be drilled and tapped.
• When using cast iron exhaust manifolds, the lower head bolts will need to be replaced with head bolts that have shorter heads if there are clearance problems.
