Welch plugs are also called freeze plugs, soft plugs, and core plugs. Their job is to plug holes in the block that were needed only during the manufacturing of the block. Welch plugs are available in three different materials brass, steel, and aluminum. Which material type works best depends on your application. For example - Bow Tie aluminum blocks require aluminum plugs while either steel or brass plugs can be installed in cast iron blocks. Brass is more corrosion resistant than steel and should be use for any marine applications. Though the name freeze plugs may have come from the Welch plugs sometimes popping out of the block as the water freezes during cold weather when the coolant was not protected properly with anti-freeze, thus in some rare cases protecting the block from the internal ice breaking the block, this is not their purpose and you should not rely on them for this.
